Training:
As a doctorally prepared and board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) I have eight years of educational training. I have a bachelors degree in nursing science from Charleston Southern University, a masters degree from UNC-Chapel Hill where I received two years of nurse practitioner training exclusively focused on psychiatric mental health, and a doctorate of nursing practice from UNC, the highest educational training one can achieve in the profession of nursing.
Note: “Dr." is an academic title, not a clinical title. Dr. Sparrow does not represent herself as a Psychiatrist or Medical Doctor. Patients may refer to Dr. Sparrow as either Dr. Sparrow or Jessica.
Experience:
I began my nursing career working in the ICU for one year, when I felt called to a different area of nursing with more patient engagement and interaction. I decided to take a psychiatric nursing position at Dorothea Dix Hospital, where I worked for several years on the acute male and female units.
With a desire to help patients outside of the hospital setting I went back to school and received my training as a PMHNP. I began working in a private practice my first year and in an outpatient clinic in Durham seeing those under served with severe and persistent mental illness for two years.
While I obtained my doctoral degree I worked part time for the North Carolina Nurses Association as their Director of Nursing Practice, assisting the organization working with internal and external groups. Upon the completion of my doctoral degree I was excited to return to practice and made the decision to open up my own practice in an effort to gain more flexibility in the care I provided.
